According to statistics from the NIMH, more than 19 million adults suffer from a
depressive illness each year. Although major depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and worldwide, less than half of those suffering from depression receive
treatment.
National Depression Screening Day is Thursday, October 7, 1999. This program is designed to educate the public about symptoms and effective treatments for depression and
manic-depression. In 1998 the program reached more than 90,000 people. We've provided
information about the screening test in the materials below.

Depression in Women: Diagnostic and Treatment Considerations The diagnostic criteria for depression are the same for both sexes, but women with depression more frequently experience guilt, anxiety,
increased appetite and sleep, weight gain and comorbid eating disorders. The article

Suicide
The most common psychiatric disorders associated with completed suicide are major
depression and alcohol abuse. Last spring we published a newsletter on suicide. The

Depression and Diabetes
Depression can strike anyone, but people with diabetes, a serious disorder that afflicts an estimated 16 million Americans,1 may be at greater risk. In addition, individuals with depression may be at greater risk for developing diabetes.

Men and Depression
