Sadly, one only needs to look at the evening news to understand that youth violence is on the rise. The events of this past week confirm that many of our children are at risk -
both in terms of their involvement in serious violent acts, but also in terms of the risk they carry for being victims of serious crime. According to statistics cited in the
article, "Violence Exposure and Emotional Trauma as Contributors to Adolescents'
Violent Behaviors," posted below, the rate of homicides committed by youths ages 14 to 17 years increased by 172% from 1985 to 1994. Another study shows significant levels of
violence perpetrated on teenagers themselves in their homes, at school, and in the
community.
As the following Web resources indicate, the effects of violence on our children are
profound, and this serious problem is worthy of close attention.
