HIPAA Made Friendly: How to Become Compliant

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations adopt standards for securing the storage of health care information, transmitting electronic claims, and protecting the privacy of patient records. The deadline for compliance with the HIPAA privacy rule is April 14, 2003, and there are penalties for noncompliance.

Essentially, HIPAA applies to all practices. For example, any person or entity that stores or transmits health or payment information in an electronic format (i.e. in a billing system or computer) is a covered entity. Even if your practice is entirely paper based, it is likely that you will be subject to HIPAA.

This course is intended to help psychologists, counselors, MFTs, social workers, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and other mental health professionals with small private practices become compliant with the upcoming HIPAA regulations. The course provides basic knowledge and fundamental tools and is written in simple, understandable language.
