Continuing Education for Florida Nurses

Florida LPNs, RNs, ARNPs, and CNS are required to take 24 hours of continuing education (CE) every 2 years.

The Florida Board of Nursing accepts courses approved by a state or national organization empowered to accredit nursing continuing education, such as the California Board of Nursing. At Health is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN), Provider # CEP 15512.

Florida Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

  • 24 hours every 2 years
  • The Board accepts home study, computer programs, internet or web-based courses
  • All offerings must be at least 60 minutes in length, or 1 contact hour.
  • General Hours - 20: Must be approved by a state or national organization empowered to accredit nursing continuing education.

  • Florida Laws & Rules - 2: Must be board approved. Approved courses are listed at cebroker.com
  • Domestic Violence - 2: Must be board approved. Approved courses are listed at cebroker.com. Domestic Violence is required every third biennium and the hours are in addition to the 24 hours required for renewal.
  • HIV/AIDS - 1: Must be board approved. Approved courses are listed at cebroker.com. HIV/AIDS is a one-time requirement prior to the first renewal.

64B9-5.003 Standards for Continuing Education (LPN)

  • Content must be relevant to current nursing practice.
  • Program must consist of content from one or more of the following:

(a) Nursing practice areas and special health care problems. (When the subject matter of an offering includes nursing practice, a nurse with expertise in the content area must be involved in the planning and instruction.)
(b) Biological, physical, behavioral and social sciences.
(c) Legal aspects of health care.
(d) Management/administration of health care personnel and patient care.
(e) Teaching/learning process of health care personnel and patients.
(f) Subjects which are taken at an accredited educational institution as verified by an official transcript, that meet any one of the criteria in paragraphs 64B9-5.003(2)(a)-(e), F.A.C., and are advanced beyond that completed for original licensure may be approved for continuing education under this rule.
(g) Personal development subject matter must include application of content as it relates to improved patient care.

Registered Nurse (RN)
