Continuing Education for Social Workers in Maine

CE requirements for ME social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LSW):

• 25 hours of continuing education every 2 years, including 4 hours of ethics
• LSW Conditionals are required to complete 6 hours of ethics and 6 hours of psychosocial assessment for their first renewal
• Maximum of 10 hours may be earned through online learning

Beginning January 1, 2020 - all applicants for initial licensure or license renewal in Maine shall demonstrate a one-time successful completion of a minimum of 12 hours of coursework in family or intimate partner violence. The coursework may be fulfilled through course work provided through contact hours, internet hours (such as through AtHealth.com) or distance learning programs as evidenced by certification from an accredited educational institution or equivalent teaching or practice experience.

CE Approvals

Continuing education must relate directly to social work practice. The Maine Board of Social Worker Licensure does not approve CE providers. Licensees are responsible for determining if a course is applicable and appropriate to his/her professional development as a social worker.

The following courses apply to the Intimate Partner Violence requirement:

• Domestic Violence: Intimate Partner Abuse (7 hours)
• Domestic Violence: Counseling Clients Involved with Violent Intimate Partners (2 hours)
• Criminal Justice Assessments: Sex Offenders & Intimate Partner Violence (2 hours)
