Continuing Education for Tennessee Social Workers

Attention: Several states and disciplines have relaxed requirements regarding live / in person Continuing Education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please check with your board to see the most current requirements.

CE requirements for TN social workers:
LAPSW, LCSW:

  • Fifteen (15) continuing education clock hours relative to social work each year
  • Ten (10) of the fifteen (15) hours must be in social work.
  • Three (3) of the fifteen (15) hours must be in professional ethics.
  • Two (2) of the fifteen (15) hours can be in either social work or professional ethics.

LMSW:

  • Twelve (12) continuing education clock hours relative to social work each year
  • Seven (7) of the twelve (12) hours must be in social work.
  • Three (3) of the twelve (12) hours must be in professional ethics.
  • Two (2) of the twelve (12) hours can be in either social work or professional ethics.

LBSW:

  • Nine (9) continuing education clock hours relative to social work each year
  • Four (4) of the nine (9) hours must be in social work.
  • Three (3) of the nine (9) hours must be in professional ethics.
  • Two (2) of the nine (9) hours can be in either social work or professional ethics.

Licensees who hold more than one (1) category of licensure to practice social work must separately satisfy the continuing education requirements for each level of licensure.

CE Approvals

The board does not pre-approve continuing education programs. It is the licensee’s responsibility, using his or her professional judgment to determine whether or not the programs are applicable and appropriate to his professional development. Maximum of two-thirds (⅔) of a licensee’s credit hours may be granted for multi-media courses during each calendar year.
