Description

This is a two-part video course from NIMH on Bipolar Disorder, developed for specialists interested in research to optimize disease management.

Part one, Gender Differences in Bipolar Disorder Across the Life Span Through an Intersectional Lens, features Dr. Hilary Patricia Blumberg and Dr. Crystal Tennille Clark.

Dr. Blumberg first outlines the clinical features of bipolar disorder that differ between genders. Second, she presents neuroimaging data supporting the working model of the brain systems involved in bipolar disorder. She also provides examples where there is initial evidence of gender differences and of contributing biopsychosocial factors. Finally, she touches on the implications of these data for treatment.

Dr. Clark discusses Bipolar Disorder and treatment through the most vulnerable time for women with Bipolar Disorder, that is the perinatal period. She speaks specifically about pharmacokinetics of the most commonly used agents to treat bipolar disorder, how these pharmacokinetics effect treatment, and how we might think about further research to optimize management of these medications and maintain wellness.

In part two, Dr. Mary Rooney provides an overview of the signs and symptoms, proper diagnosis, and treatments for Bipolar Disorder in adolescents and adults. She also discusses some of the challenges that the COVID-19 outbreak has presented for individuals living with Bipolar Disorder.
