Description

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, president of On Good Authority, interviews Robert Neimeyer, PhD, who knows about the trauma of loss and its aftermath from the inside out. In his compassionate work on coping with loss, he argues that traditional theories of grief are too superficial and simplistic. He discusses a fresh theory of grieving as a process of "meaning reconstruction."

Author Bio

Subject Matter Expert:

Robert Niemeyer, PhD, is a professor in the Psychotherapy Research Area of the Department of Psychology at the University of Memphis, where he also maintains an active clinical practice. He has published 25 books, including Grief and Bereavement in Contemporary Society: Bridging Research and Practice; Constructivist Psychotherapy: Distinctive Features; and Lessons of Loss: A Guide to Coping. Dr. Neimeyer is the editor of the respected international journal, Death Studies, and served as president of the Association for Death Education and Counseling. In recognition of his contributions, he has been granted the Distinguished Research Award by the University of Memphis; he has been designated Distinguished Psychologist of the Year by the Tennessee Psychological Association; and he has been made a Fellow of Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.

Interviewer:

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, is a graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. After working for 13 years in child psychiatric settings and 30 years in private practice, she is now founder and president of On Good Authority, and an expert interviewer.
