Description

Clinical supervision, while appearing on the surface to be similar to psychotherapy, is a different relationship, a different set of skills, with unique qualities and characteristics that set it apart. In this program, four experts discuss various aspects of supervision, including dimensions of supervision from a systemic point of view, relational models of supervision, focal process analysis, and supervisory ethics.

Target audience: Psychologists, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, social workers, addiction counselors, nurses.

Author Bio

Subject Matter Experts:

Russell Haber, PhD, is the author of Dimensions of Psychotherapy Supervision: Maps and Means. Dr. Haber is the director of the Counseling in Human Development Center of the University of South Carolina, and he is the director of the South Carolina Institute for Systemic Experiential Therapy. He has studied extensively with Carl Whitaker and Virginia Satir. He specializes in family and couples counseling, trans-generational/experiential therapy, and social networks interventions.

Wendy Haskell, PhD, is a clinician in private practice and supervision in Newton, MA. In addition to her practice, she is Adjunct Associate Professor at the Smith College School for Social Work, Adjunct Lecturer at Boston College School of Social Work, Adjunct Faculty at the Salem State College School of Social Work, and lecturer in psychiatry, a Harvard appointment at Cambridge Hospital's program for psychotherapy.

Jerrold Brandell, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Graduate Concentration in Mental Health at the Wayne State University School of Social Work. Dr. Brandell has used focal conflict analysis in his teaching and research for several years. He previously taught at Michigan State University and at Boston University, where he directed the Boston University Post Graduate Certificate Program in Advanced Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy. An advanced candidate in psychoanalysis, he is founding editor of the clinical quarterly, Psychoanalytic Social Work, and is a member of the Committee on Graduate Education of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He is the author or editor of five books and over twenty-five articles and book chapters. Active as a clinician and consultant, Dr. Brandell was recently elected to membership in the National Academies of Practice.

Carlton Munson, PhD, author of Clinical Social Work Supervision is professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. He is director of the Washington Area Supervision Institute at Woodstock Forest and has published seven books and seventy-five journal articles and book chapters. He is founding editor of The Clinical Supervision, an inter-disciplinary journal devoted to supervision research. He is a clinician/scientist whose practice and research activities focus as well on trauma and loss in children. Based on his research and scholarship related to clinical practice, he was inducted into the National Academy of Practice in 1996.

Interviewer:

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, is a graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. After working for 13 years in child psychiatric settings and 30 years in private practice, she is now founder and president of On Good Authority, and an expert interviewer.
