Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, president of On Good Authority, interviews Julie Poehlmann, PhD, who focuses on the phenomenon of grandparents raising grandchildren from an attachment perspective. Dr. Poehlmann discusses her research, which suggests bi-directional links between grandparent depression and children's behavior problems, and she explains the use of the Attachment Story Completion Task to assess attachments in young children.

Author Bio

Subject Matter Expert:

Julie Poehlmann, PhD, has had a joint appointment with the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin since 2004. Her primary appointment is in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies in the School of Human Ecology, and she is affiliated with the Waisman Center. In addition, she is a licensed psychologist in Wisconsin and New York.

Dr. Poehlmann's interests include risk and resilience in infants, toddlers, and preschoolers and their families. Her research program emphasizes the science and practice of how biological and environmental vulnerabilities interact in shaping the cognitive and social emotional development of children in high risk family contexts.

Interviewer:

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, is a graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. After working for 13 years in child psychiatric settings and 30 years in private practice, she is now founder and president of On Good Authority, and an expert interviewer.
