In the first article the authors review the efficacy of exposure therapy in the treatment of PTSD, discuss eight (8) common myths associated with its use, and provide an overview of clinical guidelines for exposure treatment. In the second article, the author reviews how traumatic events affect individuals’ core beliefs about safety, trust, and fairness and how therapists can help patients with PTSD “re-author” their view of the trauma and develop coping skills to manage PTSD and co-morbid symptomatology.

Exposure Therapy for the Treatment of PTSD

Millie Astin, PhD is Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Emory University School of Medicine. Currently, she directs two treatment outcome research studies at the Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program at Emory, one with rape survivors and one with mixed trauma survivors. She has worked extensively with trauma survivors using cognitive-behavioral interventions including exposure.

Barbara Rothbaum, PhD is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Emory University School of Medicine and Director of the Trauma and Anxiety Recovery Program. She is principal investigator for three NIMH treatment outcome studies including one grant which is exploring the efficacy of Virtual Reality Exposure with combat veterans with PTSD. She has been instrumental in the development, application and empirical validation of exposure treatment for PTSD.
