Specific legal duties are imposed on mental health professionals regarding the reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect. In this interview, Helene Snyder, JD, discusses these requirements and explains how these laws override confidentiality, so that mandated reporters must report incidents of suspected child abuse to designated authorities. She also discusses proper record keeping procedures. A course addendum provides references to federal and state statutes throughout the US.  Updated to provide current and required reporting statues for Illinois Practitioners and Texas Professional Counselors.

Author Bio

Subject Matter Expert:

Helene M. Snyder, JD, is an attorney with a background in both private practice and public interest law, including two years as a guardian ad litem representing children in abuse and neglect proceedings in the Juvenile Court of Cook County, Illinois. Since 1992, Ms. Snyder has taught courses on law and social work both at the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration and in the Graduate School of Social Work at Loyola University, Chicago, where she is an adjunct professor.

Interviewer:

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, is a graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. After working for 13 years in child psychiatric settings and 30 years in private practice, she is now founder and president of On Good Authority, and an expert interviewer.
