This manual is designed for mental health practitioners who want to establish a solid foundation of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills. The manual details the basic steps needed to provide cognitive behavioral therapy with the intent that the therapist will feel increasingly comfortable using CBT. The manual is not designed for advanced CBT practitioners.

Author Bio
Jeffrey A. Cully, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine. He is a staff psychologist and core investigator at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center's HSR&D Center of Excellence. Dr. Cully is a member of the Baylor College of Medicine's Academy of Distinguished Educators, and he services on the steering committee for the Department of Psychiatry's Clinician Educator Track. His clinical interests include cognitive behavioral therapy, short-term psychotherapy, and primary care mental health.
Andra Teten, PhD, is a health scientist in the Research and Evaluation Branch of the Division of Violence Prevention in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Clinical Psychology at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She has over 40 publications and has made numerous presentations at international, national, and local conferences. In addition to her work at CDC, she is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor College of Medicine.

- Use strategies for developing a strong therapeutic relationship
- Develop a treatment plan for patients
- Orient the patient to brief CBT
- Demonstrate a technique to address and manage dysfunctional thoughts and beliefs
- Use behavior strategies for positive patient change
- Demonstrate at least two relaxation techniques for reducing stress and anxiety
- Prepare the patient for ending treatment.
