Description

The use of marijuana is associated with several brain-based risks. The authors provide an historical perspective on marijuana and review contemporary research on its potential for negative effects on the brain. They discuss the risk of cannabis dependence, driving under the influence of cannabis, underachievement, inducing (or worsening) certain psychiatric conditions, and the potential for progression to use of more dangerous drugs -- summarized by the acronym DDUMB, a cognitive tool that will help healthcare providers in their risk/benefit discussions with patients who use cannabis.

Dr. MacDonald and Ms. Pappas are with UC San Diego Psychiatry, San Diego, CA USA

Dr. MacDonald has received training in both psychiatry and family practice, including psychopharmacology, general medical issues, and psychotherapy. He has experience in addiction (as medical director of an outpatient substance abuse program), mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and ADD/ADHD. Dr. Pappas is a Staff Research Associate with UC San Diego Psychiatry.
