Author Bio

Subject Matter Experts:

Ritch C. Savin-Williams, PhD, is a professor of developmental and clinical psychology in the Department of Human Development and the Director of the Sex and Gender Lab at Cornell University. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Savin-Williams has written seven books on adolescent development. The New Gay Teenager follows previous books on the lives of youth with same-sex attractions: "Mom, Dad. I'm Gay" How Families Negotiate Coming Out and ". . . and Then I Became Gay" Young Men's Stories. Dr. Savin-Williams is currently writing about the experiences of growing up with same-sex attractions, the resiliency and mental health of sexual-minority youth, and the sexual development of heterosexual youth.

Dr. Savin-Williams is a licensed clinical psychologist and has served as an expert witness on same-sex marriage, gay adoption, and Boy Scout court cases. He has served as a consultant for MTV's True Live, 20/20, the Oprah Winfrey Show, Dr. Phil, and CNN, and his work has been cited in Newsweek, Time, Rolling Stone, Utne Reader, Fortune, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and Chicago Sun Times.

Robert Galatzer-Levy, MD, a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, has been a training and supervising analyst at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis since 1991. As well, he has been a supervisor, Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis since 1995.

Dr. Galatzer-Levy has written many books and articles, and of greatest relevance to this topic are his books and articles written with Dr. Bert Cohler, including The Course of Gay and Lesbian Lives, and "Making a Gay Identity: Coming Out, Social Context, and Psychodynamics," in Rethinking Psychoanalysis and the Homosexualities.

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, is a graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. After working for 13 years in child psychiatric settings and 30 years in private practice, she is now founder and president of On Good Authority, and an expert interviewer.
