CE Approvals for California Psychologists

Attention: Several states and disciplines have relaxed requirements regarding live / in person Continuing Education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please check with your board to see the most current requirements.

Psychologists in CA are required to earn 36 hours of continuing education (CE) every 2 years.

  • 27 of the 36 credits can be taken online.
  • 9 of the 36 credits must be “live.” (Programs like webinars in which there is interaction with the instructor in real time, such as instant messaging, are considered “live.”)
  • At the first renewal after January 1, 2020, licensees will be required to attest to having taken a one-time 6 hour course in suicide risk assessment and intervention. The course may be taken at any time prior to the application for that renewal, and the course may be applied to the continuing education requirements in the renewal cycle during which the course was actually taken.
Our course, Suicide Assessment, Treatment, and Management, meets this requirement.

Ethics: CA psychologists are required to keep current on issues related to law and ethics. However, they are no longer required to take a specific number of ethics credits. It is now up to the psychologist to determine how this information is obtained, for example, via CE courses, home study, grand rounds, etc. We have an extensive catalog of ethics courses available.

Pursuant to §1387, licensed psychologists who supervise psychological assistants, interns, etc. must complete a minimum of six hours of supervision coursework every two years.
