Attachment theory provides a descriptive and explanatory framework for understanding interpersonal relationships between human beings. Frances Stott, PhD, presents an overview of attachment theory and discusses how children instinctively attach to caretakers in order to achieve security and survival.

Author Bio

Subject Matter Expert:

Frances Stott, PhD, is the Barbara T. Bowman Professor of Child Development at Erikson Institute - a graduate school in child development. She has been a member of the faculty since 1979. She founded and directed Erikson's Infant Studies Program in 1984, its doctoral program in 1986, and was Vice President and Dean of Academic Programs for 14 years. A clinical and developmental psychologist, Dr. Stott is currently focusing her teaching and research on parent-child relationships and social-emotional development through the life span.

Interviewer:

Barbara Alexander, LCSW, BCD, is a graduate of the Smith College School for Social Work and the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. After working for 13 years in child psychiatric settings and 30 years in private practice, she is now founder and president of On Good Authority, and an expert interviewer.
