According to statistics from the NIMH, more than 19 million adults suffer from a depressive illness each year. Although major depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and worldwide, less than half of those suffering from depression receive treatment.

National Depression Screening Day is Thursday, October 7, 1999. This program is designed to educate the public about symptoms and effective treatments for depression and manic-depression. In 1998 the program reached more than 90,000 people. We've provided information about the screening test in the materials below.
