Certification and CE Requirements for VT Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors

Attention: Several states and disciplines have relaxed requirements regarding live / in person Continuing Education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please check with your board to see the most current requirements.

Certification and CE requirements for Vermont alcohol and drug abuse counselors:

Certification - AAP (Apprentice Addiction Professional)

  • Must complete 40 hours of substance abuse education, related to the knowledge and skills necessary for (1) screening, assessment and engagement; (2) treatment planning, collaboration and referral; (3) counseling; and (4) professional and ethical responsibilities
  • 6 of the 40 hours must be dedicated to professional ethics theory and practice
    including HIPAA and Substance Abuse Confidentiality Regulations (42 CFR Part 2)
  • Certification hours can be completed online

Certification - Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (ADC)

  • Must have a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution, plus
  • 300 hours of substance abuse specific education/training, including 6 hours of human development; 6 hours of multicultural diversity; 6 hours of engagement strategies/motivational interviewing; 6 hours of substance use screening; 6 hours of DSM-5; 6 hours of American Society of Addiction Medicine patient placement criteria; 6 hours of case management and service coordination; 6 hours of neurobiology of addiction and substance use dependence; 6 hours of co-morbid medical disorders (e.g., HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C) and their integrated treatment; 6 hours of professional ethics; 12 hours of medication assisted treatment; 12 hours of clinical assessment and treatment planning; 12 hours of relapse prevention; 12 hours of criminal thinking; 24 hours of co-occurring disorders; 24 hours of trauma; 36 hours of substance abuse counseling/treatment
  • Certification hours can be completed online

Licensure - Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADC)

  • Must have a Master’s Degree from an accredited institution, plus

Continuing Education requirements for AAP, ADC, LADC

  • 40 hours of continuing education every 2 years
  • The 40 hours of continuing education must address substance abuse as the primary or co-occurring disorder.
  • Six (6) of the 40 hours must be dedicated to professional and ethical responsibilities of alcohol and drug abuse counselors including the NAADAC Code of Ethics, HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2
  • CE hours can be completed online

CE Approvals

The Vermont Office of Professional Regulation accepts programs geared toward the practice of substance abuse from NAADAC approved providers. At Health, LLC is approved as a continuing education provider by the National Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) Provider #148460.

VT alcohol and drug abuse counselors can earn certification and continuing education credits online through athealth.com.
