Ethics Courses

Most state licensing boards require continuing education courses in ethics for psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, MFTs, substance abuse counselors, and other practitioners. The number of ethics credits and course requirements varies by state and by licensing board. For example, many states require one to three ethics credits, and course requirements are general in scope. Some states, such as Florida and California, have special requirements for ethics courses for psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers, and mental health counselors.

Below is information for California and Florida psychologists, marriage and family therapists, social workers and mental health counselors regarding which of our courses meet their state's requirements for law and ethics:

California psychologists:

California psychologists are required to obtain training in the subject of law and ethics. However, effective January 29, 2007, California psychologists can now determine the most effective means to stay abreast of changes in California laws, regulations, ethical standards and standards of practice as they apply to the practice of psychology in California.

California psychologists may, but are no longer required to, take a 4-hour course in law and ethics. Under the new regulation, the individual psychologist determines the number of law and ethics credits to be taken. The following courses meet the law and ethics requirement for California psychologists.

You are required to take at least three (3) hours of ethics and risk management CE to obtain the 5% premium discount.

Psychologists can receive an additional 5% premium discount by successfully completing any additional 6 hours of CE credit. (These do not have to be ethics or risk management courses.)

To earn the discount, include the CE certificates for your courses along with your renewal payment.

If you are insured by the American Professional Agency and have any questions regarding the premium discount, please call the American Professional Agency at 800-421-6694 or 631-691-6400. To receive the discount, a CE course must be pre-qualified by the American Professional Agency.

The American Professional Agency will allow you to take the same risk management course more than once if it has been longer than one year since you last took the course. However, most licensing boards will not accept the same course twice. Our system automatically removes a course from your registration menu if a course is already in your account. Therefore, you can't register for the same course twice using the same account. In order for our CE records to be accurate, we cannot delete a previously taken course from your account. If you want to take the course again, please create another account using another e-mail address, or call us, and we will void (but not delete) your old account and set you up with a new account using your same e-mail address.

State Board and National Accrediting Organization CE Requirements

Each course in our catalog varies in its approvals. To find out the specific approvals for a course, click on the course title in the Course Catalog and then select the CE Approvals tab.

Please keep in mind that continuing education requirements for mental health practitioners vary from state to state. Many state-level boards grant reciprocity with national accrediting organizations and other state boards.

Although a majority of state licensure boards and national accrediting organizations accept online courses and home study programs for continuing education credit, some do not. Others may place a limit on the number of CE hours a practitioner can earn online or via home study. Please check with your state board and/or professional organization regarding its policies on reciprocity and online/home study accreditation prior to enrollment.

The National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC®), identifies for professionals and the public those counselors who have voluntarily sought and obtained certification and maintains a register of those counselors. NBCC's flagship credential is the National Certified Counselor (NCC).

Psychiatrists

American Psychiatric Association (APA)
The APA requires that certified members participate in at least 150 hours of continuing medical education (CME) activities per three-year period, of which at least 60 hours must be in Category 1 activities. The remaining 60 hours my be in either Category 1 or Category 2, such as reading of professional literature, self-study, and consultation.

Psychologists

American Psychological Association
The APA CE Sponsor Approval and the APA Continuing Education Committee work together to establish, implement and regulate standards and policies. Social Workers

Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB)
The ASWB, created to help state social work regulatory boards share knowledge, creates and administers licensing tests for social workers. ASWB established the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program that reviews providers and can grant approval for CE programs that cover several states.
